Ellen Axson Wilson was the first wife of President Woodrow Wilson and served as First Lady of the United States from 1913 until her death in 1914. Born in Savannah, Georgia, and raised in Rome, Georgia, she was the daughter of a Presbyterian minister and demonstrated early talent in both academics and the arts. Ellen studied at the Art Students League of New York, where she trained as a painter, later exhibiting her work and maintaining a lifelong engagement with art.
As First Lady, she combined her refined Southern graciousness with a deep social conscience. She took particular interest in the living conditions of Washington, D.C.’s impoverished African American communities, especially those in the alleys behind the capital’s wealthier neighborhoods. Ellen used her influence to advocate for housing reform and improvements in public health and sanitation—rare and progressive interests for a First Lady of her time.
Ellen Wilson died of Bright’s disease (a kidney disorder) on August 6, 1914, becoming the third First Lady to die while her husband was in office. Her death deeply affected President Wilson, who described her as his “best counselor and deepest comfort.” She left a legacy of quiet but committed service, intellectual and artistic cultivation, and compassionate social awareness.
